Elephant in the room

Post by allan horsfall »

Gentlemen,

I keep thinking recently about whats likely to happen to our car ownership over the next few years, with pressure from the environmentalists and the political drive towards electric vehicles.
Are our cars going to be driven off the road through lack of suitable fuel, extortionate road tax, geographical exclusion zones, stricter MOT testing.?
Will only true classics be given some latitude or exemption.?
Will our departure from the EU be a benefit or hinderance as far as legislation is concerned.?
Am I going to end up racing against an invalid carriage at the lights?
Are the days of the 'hairy arm' driver numbered, and should I buy shares in Gillette?

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

I think we all need to keep a close watch. I am expecting a ban on driving into city centres, same as France, in next few years.
But thats just an inconvenience.

The real change (i.e. disaster) will come when the electric car tipping point occurs - that is, when electric cars are virtually the same price as petrol/diesel cars, and there are sufficient charging points to get over range paranoia. When electric car sales then start to equal petrol diesel car sales will be the moment when the govt strikes and puts petrol taxes on a massive hike to get people off petrol to meet our emissions targets. And at that point only the richest of us will keep our cars on the roads....the rest of us will just be using them as track day cars I suspect :(

As I heard someone else say: 'I'm glad I lived in the age of petrol'.

I would suggest that the first step would be restrictions on new builds and new registrations first. Also tightening of congestion charges in large urban areas would be an indication of change. Tax hikes would be another initial step.
Attempts to introduce punitive legislative restrictions were shelved during the last consultation.
I'm not overly concerned. I even bought another Diesel vehicle as the number of electric cars that can tow 2 tonnes and drive through 2 feet of water (a requirement where I live as our fields are used as a flood defence to save Shrewsbury) are limited.
I'm also building another V8 kit in the not too distant future.
