After a trip to Stoneleigh on Monday (240 mile round trip) in the FIA, I looked underneath to find it liberally coated with diff oil. I’m guessing it’s coming from the front of the Diff rather than the back. I’d appreciate opinions please. Is the front seal easily replaced in situ?

Hi Simon,
The front pinion seal is not a five minute fix.
Read my write up on refurbing the axle.
Home page, building and servicing your 289, Building a 289 Stuart Clarke, refurbing the axle.
You may/should be able to replace in situ if you've got access to a four post lift

Re: MGB axle issues
Thought that would be the case.
Can anybody recommend a suitable MGB experienced mechanic/ workshop in the SE Who could replace this for me?
Thank you

Re: MGB axle issues
A normal garage should be able to do it, in the absence of an MG specialist. You just need to advise them of the preload on the pinion nut and it needs to be tightened back to the exact same place rather than just tightening it up. Its not beyond the means of a reasonable mechanic, I did mine

Re: MGB axle issues
Right, took the axle out of the car and took it to an MG specialist because of this...
Turns out it’s not part of a tooth (too small) but is a part of a broken spacer. Fortunately NOT a spacer that’s in the car! It seems it may have been left behind when the axle was rebuilt by the MGOC and I’m very lucky it’s sat in the bottom and not been caught up in the gears whizzing around just above it. As the car has only done 420 miles it hasn’t had time to get dislodged. He inspected the Diff then changed my front seal all for £35! A true gent.

Excellent news.
So you breathed an enormous sigh of relief and had a beer to celebrate.
