MX5 seat fitment

Post by kdavies3 »

Hi again all,
a quick question fir those of you that have used MX5 seats.
Did you bolt them in on their original rails?
Or maybe bolt them direct to the floor in fixed position?
I don't want to re-invent the wheel, knowing that it's been done many times.

Many thanks

Hi Kev, I think it depends on how tall you are. I'm 6'2" so had to bolt to the floor to be able to look through the windscreen! You need to be very careful about the position of the chassis as for me they were where I wanted to fit the seats, so quite a bit of measuring to successfully fit, in the end I used 1/8" steel strip to bolt to the seat which allowed more adjustment of where the seat could be. Good luck with the fitting.

Fitting the seats always involves trying to miss the chassis. My bolts are tucked up tight into the corner between the floor and chassis tube.

BTW it helps a lot to use a cardboard template longer than the seat. Fix to the seat with the seat bolts. You can then position the seat, fixing the position of the cardboard with tape, so the cardboard can be replaced giving you the ideal seat position. Then comes the task of measuring to ensure you miss the chassis bits. You also need to use "suitable spreaders" under the fibreglass to support the seat from breaking through in case of accident.
Hope that helps.

Hi Kev,
I've seen plenty of people that use some 6mm bright flat bar and use two transverse pieces bolted to the available seat runners with counter sunk bolts from underneath and in turn drill holes in the bar to match available holes in the floor. If you catch my drift. You can kind of align the bars to suit from the top and use a marker pen or spray through the holes from underneath the car.
