Where do you find this on an original 289? Most likely a later leafspring rack-and-pinion car.

Well, it's a "Hillman" hole plug, but God knows where it would go, but I'd guess at the interior trim somewhere??

Nope - those have the correct rubber plugs in them. As do the much larger ones in the wheelarches to access the tank straps.
