Introduction

Post by Insaneron »

Hello everyone

I'm based just outside Portsmouth. On a wim I've brought a part built Cobra. After some digging it's a BRA289 mk2. Do any of you out there in cyber land know to much about them.

Mine seems a miss match of parts the paperwork I got says it's a MGB based car. But has I thing escorts rear axle, escort column, cavalier/farenza front cross member and rack, ford front vented discs.

Help what have I done

Seems it is a KD 289 Roman Kit Cars. Long gone, modified BRA 289 body shell with Ford running gear.

Hello Migge

Thanks for you info. All the paperwork and letters say BRA289 MK2 and dated 89. How feasible is it to get the older style through IVA as it is. It comes with a large inventory of parts be a shame to bin them all. Although old everything is new and boxed. The body for some reason had been removed from the chassis but not a drama as I can repaint the rolling chassis before remounting the body. My only concern is not having receipts for the parts.

Thanks

Hi,

I have a BRA 289 bought as a kit in 1985. Do you have any photos of what you have bought?

I have no knowledge of how to get your car through an IVA but there are people in this club who will have.

Hello Dave

How do I post pics on here. I have the body off so I'll get some detailed pics later today and try and post them. I'll try to post some in the gallery later as well

Thank you

You need to set up a photo hosting account with Photobucket or similar and copy and paste the link that links the photo.
Don't want to sound like a pessimist but it is going to be tough to get an old kit like that through IVA and the best you'll get is a Q plate when you come to register owing to the multiple donors. Your name has some truth, sorry. We'll help where we can but you had best down load the IVA manual from VOSA and work out yourself if you think its possible and if you would be happy with the outcome. Good luck and all the best.

IVA (VOSA) isn't the issue, the inspector has no interest in the origin of the parts. Engine dating is relavant to emission tests but that's about it.

However, DVLA will allocate a Q plate if you cannot complete with the very simple rules to get an age related registration. All current builders need to be aware that since DVLA's Kits and Rebuilds team is now located in Swansea, where all kit car applications are processed, there is an increasing awareness of all kits and their donors and which parts are typically and required to be used.

Thanks for all the comments and help. IVA downloaded.

I have a Photobucket account so can upload pics later. My user name is quite appropriate for some of the cars I've built over the years. Engine and box P5 rover V8. I'm hoping I can get this car sorted out as it would be a shame to scrap or break it up.

To get an age related numbe plate I thought that you needed a V5 from a suitably old car ( preferably pre 1973 ) and then prove that the major components in the rebodied car were from the donor.
Engine ( with proven old date) , gearbox, front axle, rear axle and steering rack as a minimum.
As Stewbie has already stated you have quite a mixture of parts so it's unlikely that they will issue an old plate.
The DVLA are a lot more clued up and will look to prevent anything creeping through that is not genuinely old.
The engine date will prove what emissions are needed and also dictate the likely year of any age related plate that might be applicable. E.g. You put a new engine into an old car and when newly registered it gets a new reg and the strict emissions to match.
Best of luck.

The design and build of the car may well be the issue for IVA, I said it would be tough not impossible. For age related registration with DVLA at least two major components from 1 donor, v5 required. One further component can also be second hnd with evidence of age, all other components new and receipted otherwise it is of "questionable" origin hence "q" plate. JMHO
