Covid Crusties

Post by KevinW »

I know that a number of people on here have been shielding, including me. Officially we are now allowed out from virtual house arrest. I confess that to save my sanity I have made some trips out already but avoiding all contact with other potentially infected people. The first wave was scary, but perhaps I have now got used to it, Certainly I think we are all better informed, and I feel heartened by the change in govt mood music.

With talk of meets starting up , but a rise in infections, I wondered what attitudes to risk there might be?
Absolute risk is low, but impact for those 'at-risk' is potentially disastrous....bit like not wearing a seat belt, and hoping the other guy is sensible.

Part of me feels its time to live a little before things get worse, but I am currently ping-ponging between 2 extreme positions.
Be interested to hear what others 'at risk' think?

Personally, I see nothing risky in a sensible car meet, proper distancing, outside catering, proper hand sanitisation. As most of us are of a “certain age” we are probably more careful than most. I can however see that a mixed meeting with owners of a different age group (ie the corsa brigade) would be much more risky as youngsters are generally not taking the whole business as seriously as we are (with regards to distancing)

We have been shielding for my disabled son. We now venture out for drives and the odd drink at a pub outside table. We do not go anywhere that means socialising inside with others, so no indoor meets, drinks, eats etc. TBH it is not been too bad, still plenty of nice drives, and with a nice garden to enjoy lockdown has not been a chore. Oh and the pushbike has been deployed !!!!

It’s also about risk taking.....do you stay indoors for the next 1,2,3,4+ years in the hope there may be a vaccine or do you balance the risks carefully and venture out? Seems to me it’s finding the balance you’re comfortable with. As long as you’re not doing silly things and looking after yourself and those around you, you should be as safe as you can be. You’re right Kevin, you’ve got to live your life, you never know what other things are round the corner......there...that cheered everybody up? 😱

Lots of this reflects my thoughts and actions to dates, although I haven't attended any car meets.

But be careful folks: one of my team at work has just gone down with a second dose of it whilst staying at her parents: she's 28, and been pretty careful as she's got a long term med problem.

I am over 70, diabetic and I had a quadruple heart bypass last year. I have been reasonably careful but we have to look after my mother-in-law who is approaching 101 years old (she still lives in her own house with a lot of help from visiting carers 4 times per day). We do her shopping etc. Car clubs and car events have been a sanity saver for me, so on Sunday I was competing in a sprint at Curborough in my Radical all carefully conducted from a Covid point of view. I did go to a car show a few weeks ago. Zoom is amazing. We have started going out to a restaurant with great care. We have booked a weeks holiday on a narrow boat which I am really looking forward to. I have not been in a pub. David

Wow! that's the first time I've heard of someone getting a second dose.
Were both doses confirmed as Covid 19?
Wife and I had all the symptoms back in January, never left the house for 3 weeks by default 'cos I couldn't.
The experts say it wasn't here then?
Personally I think that's Bull.

Hi Kev - First time around she basically had a temperature, a cough and shortness of breath making talking difficult, whilst her husband had the fever and loss of smell. Whilst she didn't get a test, it all seemed pretty compelling to me when I saw her on Zoom. The she travelled to her parents in Iran - they had someone in to cook for them one day, who it turned out was pre-symptomatic - first her Dad went down then her Mum. Both of them tested positive. 5 days later she's getting better, but she told me it was much worse second time around with complete lethargy and tiredness, inability to eat/drink (she had to get a rehydration drip at the hospital for 24hrs, then discharged) along with the cough and temperature. There are a few cases of re-infection reported in the literature. I think its not fully understood, but I have read that mild earlier cases might not produce enough T-cells and antibodies to ward off a re-infection, or perhaps shes got the other strain that's in circulation.
Stay safe!

Well, my first “car meet” was yesterday with other 289 register members. All social distancing regulations were observed and we ate (and chatted) outside. Felt quite comfortable and as normal as can be expected.
If the numbers don’t start going down soon, the winter time will be a difficult time to socialise in.

I had no problem with full lockdown. I'm a miserable anti social sod anyway. I was still getting up and going to work (alone) and popping out on my bike for a few miles each evening (alone), and was free to potter around in the allotment as much as i wanted. The shops and streets were empty, the roads were deserted and you could hear the birds singing and smell the wild garlic drifting from the woods a half mile away. The spam stopped in my inbox, postbox and down the telephone line. I had more time to eat better, had time to read more and spend more time with my children. Inlaws couldn't pop round every two sodding minutes and my half hour stoll to work and back was bliss. The only cloud was that i couldn't go down to North Yorkshire and to my beloved moors every weekend.

Ah, happy days they were :)
