Breakdown Cover
My breakdown cover is due for renewal and as our two main vehicles are covered by manufacturers warranty I only require cover for the 289. Most companies vary by cost and service provided. Currently with the RAC, (and have been since 1979), the annual cost has sky rocketed to £175 for roadside rescue and recovery . What provider does other members use and have they had any experience of dealing with said companies?

I pay an extra ~£50 for roadside recovery via RAC on my car insurance.
It certainly came in handy on my 'DNF' trip the London Classic Car Show.

Hi Clive,
several times over the years.
Both with Cobras and the last time was my Mustang when it died on the way home from Silverstone two years ago.
Can't fault them.
They use use all independent services.

Thanks Kev. I spoke to the RAC and they have offered a 33% discount capprd for two years. I have a week to decide, but I'll check Autoaid.

I've been with the AA all my life and only have good things to say about them.
Had to call them out on a few of occasions. Once when the timing belt broke on the wifes Renault, once with the 289 when it just wouldn't start having stopped at a service station on the way back from Silverstone (dead battery that they replaced on the spot) and once when Paul Blore put diesel in his 427 in the lake district (I was the passenger so they came out to us, drained his tank, carb, fuel lines, the lot, refilled with petrol and got us on our way again). They will do everything they can to get you back on the road. With the wife's renault, the guy put me on his flatbed and took me all the way home to Manchester from South of Birmingham, even though policy was to drop me at the nearest service station.
They also provided cover through our various Le Mans trips.
Genuinely only ever had good experiences with them and happy to pay the bit extra for that peace of mind.

Thanks Dave. Back in the day when I first took out breakdown cover there was only AA and RAC but now there is such a large choice of providers and options of cover from individual to multiple cover and as passenger. I have opted to renew my RAC but at the discounted price which brings it in line with other providers. What really irks me is what they charge if you don’t challenge them.

Agreed Clive. True of most businesses these days unfortunately. My issue with the many other providers now is that I don’t want to be at the mercy ‘local’ recovery services. I’ve always preferred the true national offering of the AA and RAC.

Some years ago I ran a big end bearing in the Mustang on the Estoril GP circuit on a classic run and had to have the car recovered home. No fuss, no arguments, hire car across national borders, hotel offered but not needed. The car was picked up within 30mins on a Portuguese bank holiday and arrived at my house 10 days later, having covered around 2,500km in a 'In Time' covered truck. Incredibly good service.
