Modern diesel generators are very quiet. Mine is in my workshop in my back garden with an exhaust through the wall, I cannot hear it in the house, my neighbour (semi) would not hear it at all.
Of course he would be able to have power to keep his fridge and freezer cool, and to run his heating pump. Country folk are there for each other.

Sorry to hear of your problems - similar happened here earlier this year when a drunken idiot drove into the telegraph pole that supplies power into local houses. We have already got a draw full of candles and torches ready for the potential for power cuts, either through Putin, storm issues (10 days without power last year), or idiot drivers. Luckily we have a wood burner and gas stove so that we have some basics. I have also bought an invertor to use with my spare cobra battery so that smaller household items like the Wifi router / laptops can be run.
