Lubricating door locks

Post by peterc »

Not a car subject but rather important none the less.
We all know maintenance is important but when did you last lubricate the multi point locking system on your house door?
Having just paid out over £200 to have a new gearbox installed in the rear garage door I would confess to not very often.
Unfortunately having removed the gearbox portion of the door locking system and opened it up I found a broken piece. So a new gearbox was needed. The broken part concerned was your typical low quality casting.

Thankfully a new unit was supplied and fitted in only an hour from my call by local locksmith retaining the existing lock barrel and therefore the key. Peace of mind that the garage was made secure again.
He recommended lubricating ALL the mechanism twice a year especially as the top and bottom latching systems tend to suffer from metal fatigue. If that happens you may well need a new door!.

So get out with the silicone spray and give the whole lot a good dose ready for winter.
