Some have mentioned Galaxy R1 tyres, available from Northants tyres: http://www.northhantstyres.com/
No Personal knowledge of them. 👍🏻
I have V-rated Galaxy 235s up front and 255s on the rear. Have done less than 100 miles on them, but my limited experience is that they are very good - I haven't tested them to the limits of grip. Key difference between Galaxy and Avon tyres is the tread pattern: the Galaxy is a tad modern, whereas the Avons have a nice period zig-zag. Whether that and the slightly stickier compound (if you drive near the limit) warrants triple the price is up the buyer.

NB Galaxys are only available in a 60 profile, and not every tyre in the Galaxy range is V-rated.
However, I dont think you will find any bad reviews on Galaxys or Avons, so each to his own.

Will have a chance to see what they can next year or 2022 but the look good, the price is okay and on CRC a lot of users give them thumbs up.

Those Galaxy tyres look ok, you could shave off the lettering as Nigel Pittard did with his for a more ‘period’ look.
On the website, there are 70 & 75 profile Galaxies, but is the speed rating a problem?

Just seen a used set of 4 Avon 205/70/15 CR6ZZ on eBay for £400, but you don’t get your stagger.

As I have a 427 body I went with brash and bold lettering on the outside.
I was in 2 minds which way to mount the tyres, but my 17 year old boy who accompanied me to NorthHants tyres egged me on to go with the latter.

Some badly taken pics attached before I wiped off the blue PVA film on the lettering.

These are 205/70 Blockleys. Nice period tread pattern but I don’t think they give you bulging look ( although they may have other sizes)

Kev, not wishing to spoil the image you would like but I would be a bit circumspect in going too wide on the rear. An over zealous MOT inspector or policeman might take you to task if the tyre protrudes beyond the wheel arch in the manner shown in your initial photo.
Your decision obviously but I’m aware of what has been an issue in previous years and of course now the IVA.

Thanks for all the help guys - I have now bought a set of wire wheels which I will paint black and then decide what tyres I am going to fit. The advice given is most appreciated.

All the best,
Kev

There is a pair of AVON 215/70’s ON EBAY at the moment for £199, same size as I have for the rear, and (on the MGB axle) they don’t protrude beyond the wheelarch.

(Yes, I need to lower the suspension an inch or so)

I have just had my wheels powdercoated by North Wales Metal Finishers and I’m delighted with the results! Sometimes powdercoat can look a little ‘clumpy’, but they have made a superb job of these...

considering what they looked like when I bought them!

Finish looks good. But the wheel looks a bit lost in the wheel arch.
