Oil temp gauge issue resolved

Post by simonjrwinter »

Took me ages to suss this out. It’s probably something people with a modicum more intelligence would work out immediately.
I’d removed the dash so took out the gauge, checked it, checked the wiring and found it all as expected apart from the sender. Presuming it was the sender. It wasn’t until last night when I worked it out.
Sender is top, front of the remote filter.
The problem and solution are in the picture....
Care to guess?

Indeed!
The sender needs an Earth.
The filter housing was bolted to a glassfibre inner wing and connected with rubber hoses (albeit with stainless overbraids) so simple. I’m sure most people would have worked it out immediately.

All the electrical gauges are earthed through the sender. ie the power goes to the instrument and earths through the sender, which is a variable resister. Looking at your picture I thought the yellow insulated terminal bolted through the filter bracket was an earth.
Cheers, Clive.

It’s what I put on after I’d sussed it out. Without it....nothing!

I saw an earth in the photo, guess that was an 'after' shot?
