Tyre recommendation

Post by stu60 »

Hi
Hope everyone is staying safe in these strange times. At least I getting round to the small jobs had been putting off!

I think I need to replace the Pirelli 4000 tyres 205/70 R15 more to do with age (9 years) than wear.

Does anyone have any recommendations and/or experience. The car is used for general driving and touring not tracked.

As an aside, what is the best place for placing 4 axle stands on the hawk chassis? I've tried various parts of the chassis but always think there must be an optimal location.

Thanks Stuart

Hi Stuart,

I had the same problem a couple of years ago and ended up with Blockley tyres. https://www.blockleytyre.com/ . Initially I just replaced the rears and to be honest the car didn't feel quite planted on the road although it might have been in my mind as I never had any real issues. I spoke to Blockley and they advised to change the other two and if there wasn't any improvement they would take them back and refund me the cost. I took them up on the offer and the transformation was fantastic, in fact I would say the car handles and looks better now than it did with the P4000s. Incidentally, I still have a pair of P4000s with more than 5mm tread on them if anyone is interested.
Cheers, Clive.

Stuart

I have Blockleys on mine - refused to pay AVON prices - excellent in the dry, nice feel, lots of warning before letting go. However returning from the Scottish road trip last year in the rain I had a few 'nasties' which did tend to make me think twice.

Hi Frank
That's interesting but will probably go with Blockleys, they are local to me and I only use car in dry. I'm not clear if they fit or just supply so will see post lockdown.

As you say other options are ridiculously expensive at ≥£300 tyre. I have seen Galaxy R1's from Northants tyres advertised, they are worryingly cheap and never heard of them so think Blockleys

Stuart

They do fit but give 'em a call first.

Wow, the Avon prices have certainly gone up a lot.
I am very pleased with mine on my FIA. Transformed the car but then I was comparing them with 15 year old Pirelli’s .

Blimey, that’s £1500 for a set of Avon’s!
