Bonnet (Hood) Rivets on a 289 Sebring????

Post by kdavies3 »

Hi Guys,
I've fitted my hood scoop which will have rivets.

Now my question is should I fit bonnet rivets?
Did the original Sebring cars have them?
If so which pattern, I'm a fan of the 12-1-12 look personally. (think the 15-1-15 looks too busy)
Used that on my previous 427s.
Or the ERA pattern with wider spacing and no centre rivet.

I searched around and can't find an answer.

Please help experts. :D

Kev, if you google AC Cobra Sebring you can get a few photos. Black car No 198 shows the rivets reasonably clearly.
It’s 8 along the side till the corner and then turn to cross the rear. I appreciate that doesn’t give you a total per side and whether one of them would be central. Perhaps by marking it out on your bonnet scoop it might then show you the spacing needed to continue with.

Sorry just realised you said bonnet rivets not scoop rivets. Photos of Mr Grant in the workshop with the Coventry Motors Car doesn’t appear to show any bonnet rivets. Maybe Migge would know as he has made a very good copy.

It's not the case that all Sebring cars have identically rivets locations.

CSX 2128 had 12 rivets.

Jesus, CSX 2196 had 11 rivets on the bonnet, not 12 :-).

Counted 11 on the original car, duplicated 11 rivets on the tribute car and wrote 12 :-)

Kev, best not to fit any rivets until the car is painted, and then it has to be well cured before riveting. If you rivet it prior to the paint process, you'll lose the rivets " definition" under the paint, plus it could cause issues after time. Best to drill the holes, get it painted and then rivet later ;-)

Nige,
Do you not fit the rivets part way through the paint process?
I supplied the rivets to be fitted by the paint shop on the basis you describe of losing the definition if fitted too early but still needing to be painted body colour.

Thanks Nige, that was my plan.
I guess the rivets will be glued in rather than actually pulled.
Would you paint the rivets separately or just leave them bare?
I would have thought they'd be painted on on ally car that's been painted?
Thanks Peter that's the point I was typing when you replied.
