The spinner was really tight and held in place with lockwire. As soon as the bolts fell out and I braked,, the disc stopped but the wheel continued to turn as it had the weight of the car to deal with. The turning motion unscrewed the spinner and spat it off.

Sure, the movement is between the adapter and the wheel. No damage at the wheel where the adapter sits?

Are the splines in the adaptor and not the wheel?

Yes, the adaptor is bolted to the wheel (or not)

Assuming it’s the same FIA type as mine then the centre of the wheel is steel and obviously bolted to the alloy casting of the wheel. I have never checked mine in over 20 years. I had assumed they were a force fit and bolts would have been fixed with loctite.
In view of your near calamity I will be checking mine.

Good idea.
I’ve just removed my rear wheels, taken off the adaptors fixed with medium strength thread lock and re-fitted them with high strength thread lock........once (nearly) bitten and all that....

Bolt-in spline adaptors were common in period - Minilite used them in all sorts of applications for cars normally fitted with wires, such as Healeys, TRs, Jags, MGs etc. It's the same old story - these are competition parts, and would have been checked, then stripped and reassembled if necessary after every outing. They'd be checked again at scrutineering.

They do - but they still get checked every time out!
