Fitting screen to bubbletop

Post by KevinW »

I've finally started mocking up my bubbletop to the Crendon, and started the surgery, which is a bit scary. When I bought the bubbletop second-hand it came with a selection of rubbers strips I've been sorting through to understand what's what. Thanks to the excellent article in the mag I now know what Claytonrite rubber strip looks like. But I have been trying to work out what rubber strip runs across the top of the screen and how this should be secured. For the windscreen to hardtop seal I am guessing I really need a piece of D section like this:

or is this foam rubber strip better?

Any comments/pics from hardtop people would be aprpeciated.

Hi Kev,
You want some high quality closed cell foam strip. Which thickness depends upon the gap between you screen and hard top flange. It'll need to be replaced frequently anyway. Most tops you see end up with tape across to keep all of the moisture out.

Thanks Stu. Bit disappointed to read that - I was rather hoping for 'an almost waterproof'' fit and forget solution!
Anyway, forewarned is forearmed, best buy extra for the future.

Kev, it might be worth investigating a method of fixing the roof to the screen in the middle, to prevent lift, I can see daylight (and feel the rain!) if I don’t have tape across the join...

No daylight visible on mine at all across the front, but it has been tilted upwards to clear the roll bar which looks like it gives much better compliance between screen and hardtop. Il'l have another think about this once I have the front leading edge re-glassed onto the rear half. Any reason not to use an L-shaped rubber moulding that would seal across the top and the front face of thee top of the screen frame?

I should have made clear, my roof is a tight fit to the screen when stationary, but over 40-50mph, it opens up...

- ah, very useful to know. I might add some re-enforcement in that area.

Top of the roof is a very low pressure zone (wool stands vertical) so it gets vacuumed up.
