Help with Tyres - 289 Racing Look for Road Use

Post by Kevbuts »

Hi All,

I am currently on the lookout for some new tyres for my BRA 289, and would like to achieve a staggered stance a close as possible to that of Martin Hunt's 260 Cobra (photo attached if I have uploaded it correctly!).

Martin's car is running Dunlop Racing Cross-ply 600L x 15 tyres on the front, and 650L x 15 tyres on the rear. I really like the bulgy sidewall and narrower tread look and stance of Martin's slab sided car, and the staggered sizing front-to-back.

As the Dunlop Racing tyres are not road legal what alternative road legal tyres are available that I could fit to 15 x 6" wire wheels to achieve a similar stance and look?

I appreciate any help and guidance anyone can offer. Any photos you can share of your cars on alternative similar looking tyre set-ups would be great to see :D

Many thanks,

Kev

Hi Kev.
Those look like cross plies.
If you can afford them go Avon CR6ZZ Radial
https://www.longstonetyres.co.uk/vintag ... zz/15.html
Had them on my last 3 Cobras.

Or these...

These have the bigger OD and will fit the arches the same as those pictured

Thanks Kev - It's a shame the Avon's are so expensive otherwise I would definitely go with these. What are they like in the wet? The tread profile doesn't look great for expelling water and preventing aqua-planing!

The Dunlop Racing tyres are Cross-ply's.

Thanks for the link Stu - I had seen these Avon Textile Radial tyres on Longstone's website. They look ideal. Unfortunately they don't off a smaller diameter version (equivalent to a 600L x 15) for the front though. These Avon's would be too big for the front, so I could only use them on the back and then have mis-matched tyres which I aren't wild about bearing in mind how expensive they are!

Longstone tyres recommended the Michelin XWX as a bulgy radial tyre alternative. Anyone got any photos of a 289 slab side with these tyres fitted?

Thanks Stu - The Blockley tyres seem to get good reviews, and look nice on cars I have seen them fitted too. Might be worth considering :D

This is very helpful in selecting front/rear stagger combinations:

Hi Kev, The Avon CR6ZZ are a racing tyre too.
They're superb wet or dry.
As said shame about the price.
Quite a few on the Cobraclub.com forum have gone over to the Galaxies it seems.
