302 dating

Post by simonjrwinter »

I’m dismantling the old engine from my GT40. It was built in 1990 and (I think) the engine was originally sold to the builder as a new engine. He updated it within the first couple of years of the car’s life but I understand he kept the original block. Just wonder if someone can give me a manufacturing date from these pics? (Or have I missed additional numbers in another area?)
Thanks in advance.

The casting date is down by the starter motor, note, it is not the long engineering number ie C8AE................
More like 8A25 with a screwhead at each end of it.
8A25 would be 1968 January 25th

Try taking a careful rubbing of the raised letters to see if it makes a bit clearer.

I’ve been told the “E7” blocks were made between 87 and 92.

The very top picture on this site is of the starter motor area of a '67 289 block, the casting date code is above the engineering number.
Your block being a much later 302 may well be in a different location. The last image you posted does look like a date code, maybe a wire brush and a rub with white chalk will reveal it.
Scroll a fair way down to find E7 block info.

https://www.enginelabs.com/engine-tech/ ... 1952-1996/

Bear in mind the engineering number will give a broad date range of that particular block, for IVA purposes you may need to pin down the actual casting date, which is the smaller number group as I mentioned above.

Are there any numbers behind where the starter motor would locate ?

Edit
According to this site, if your block is engineering number E7TE it is a one year only - 1987 block. Your first pic might show E7TE ? Which may also be down by the starter.
