Towing with Rover Gearbox

Post by peterc »

After my recent experience of vehicle recovery I was informed that you should NOT tow a car with the rear wheels on the ground if it has a manual Rover Gearbox.
Apparently the internal oil pump works from the incoming gears and not the output gears. This means when towing the gearbox will be short of oil circulation.
Can anyone confirm this?

Hi Peter, from memory I believe you are correct.
Also
From the Haynes manual:

"Manual gearbox models must not be towed with the rear wheels on the ground unless the propeller shaft has been disconnected at the rear axle...."

The transmission's oil pump runs off the layshaft and indeed does not operate when in neutral.

Thanks Kevin.
Better to be forewarned than trash the gearbox.
