Rover gearboxes

Post by simonjrwinter »

What’s the best gearbox to go behind a rover 4.6 engine? An LT77? R380?
Thanks

The R380 is spoken about as being stronger.
I have a 4 litre Rover with 240bhp and I use an LT77 which works well. It has been in the car for 33 years. I decided to have it reconditioned about 20 years ago but the guy who did it didn't make a very good job of it so I did have a problem, when I got it properly reconditioned it has been fine ever since.

Just an interesting reading if you try to swap a R380 for a LT77

https://www.marcosforum.org/lt77-r380-swap-t5946.html

BTW I run a LT77 for 6 years now (aka 8T miles) with a 222 HP RV8 and an still works fine. I must say, that I have used this advice:

I asked Gerry when I built mine and he advised that the R380 was not a straight swap. You will need to modify the gearbox mounting. I don’t know how big an issue that is.
It might be just a height adjustment or maybe moving of the mounting forward/back.
You would need to check the dimensions.
I have run an LT77 box with my 4.6 Rover ( circa 275 BHP) for over 23k Miles. Only minor issue has been getting the selector to engage third quickly. Careful adjustment of the gearstick end of the selector system is needed.
Part of that issue can be the nut behind the wheel and his ability to operate the clutch pedal in correct unison and not rushing.

PS don’t use ATF it’s not thick enough, use proper gearbox oil. Castrol Multitrans for example.

Having just clicked on Migge’s link I think that answers the question and confirms what I thought Gerry had said. Be prepared to cut and weld the existing mounting.

It seems that this forum is even in winter very low visited. At least only a few persons at all post some contend. People asking something respond often not at all after getting the note or advice. So I for myself have decide to be only a reader for the next few months. The world is getting very strange. Each day a bit more. Take care.

Sorry to hear that Migge. It certainly isn't what it used to be. You take care too.
Cheers, Clive.

I for my part haven’t had the internet for last 16 days otherwise I would have posted earlier.
But yes I guess you are correct as people appear to have hibernated.
