Thanks chaps! Just checked and when I pull back on the wheel the steering arm under the bonnet moves so perhaps something loose in the rack.

Correct!
That's because its set up for Metric use!
For Imperial use the bolt needs to be screwed in from the top!

getting back to steering wheel and boss,there was mention of a collapsable boss for the IVA can anyone elaborate.thanks in anticipation.

I'm not aware if you require a collapsable steering wheel boss for IVA if you use the Hawk offset steering column between the steering rack and MG column. (I might however be wrong).
I do know that one member, Will Gyles, did incorpporate one for SVA. Perhaps you could contact him for more information.
