Hawk build advice from a novice

Post by kenv »

Hi All, I made many mistakes (some potentially more serious than others ) during the build process, as I'd not built a kit before. Wasn't sure if it would be helpful to people either starting or thinking about building a replica. If you think it could be helpful feel free to add things.
In no particular order!
Think ahead!
I’d recommend join the 289 club as soon as you decide to go ahead (yes I know! but it is very helpful) and read the posts as there are many good tips in there, but sometimes they take a bit of ferreting out) Also don’t be afraid to ask questions everyone is very helpful.
Decide on and source the component parts as soon as you can, keeping other items you will/might need too.
Take photos of the donor vehicle and it’s strip down (vital if you don’t want a Q plate, I didn’t know this until too late and didn’t record it! 😞)
Save images of other similar cars to help with colour choice later on.
Photograph and keep a journal during the build to prove to IVA you have built it, you’ll need to do a diary of the work with photos for them.
Check costs as carefully as you can THEY MOUNT UP!
Try to order bespoke parts in advance i.e. windscreen, grille etc as they can take a while to arrive
A decent towcar is needed as the finished car is quite heavy for a small saloon.
Recognise your shortcomings and try to source people locally to take on those items
Finally, ENJOY THE PROCESS! and don’t forget Gerry at Hawk cars has done it all so can always get you out of a jam.
Regards
Ken

Ken have enabled private messages? I’ve sent you one but it’s sitting in the “outbox” rather than the sent folder so I presume you’ve not received it?
Thanks
