289FIA build in Australia

Post by xb-60 »

Hello.
For the last couple of years I've been building a 289FIA replica. I'm in Australia, and FIA replicas (or any 289 cars) are not thick on the ground here. In fact mine, to the best of my knowledge is the first FIA replica to be started here; the second, using a body from the splash mould created from my car's body, is now well advanced.

I'll start by posting some early pictures to get me up to my current progress point.

Cheers,
Glen

Hi Glen, and welcome!

Great to have you on board. We have two members from Australia, one in Victoria and one in Queensland. I have seen your pictures on the Cobra Club Forum and I like what you have posted. Good luck with the build.
Cheers, Clive.

(If I'm not here I'm in my workshop or on the golf course!)

There’s a BRA 289 in Melbourne.
Sorry just realised that’s Victoria.

Thanks Clive. Will start adding pictures when I work out how to create an album. Do I need a certain number of posts first?

Glen

Hi Peter,
That BRA 289 in Melbourne is a roadster, I think, not an FIA.
I attended the Victorian Cobra Club monthly meeting recently (I'm in Adelaide, SA) and anything "289" was completely new to them. In fact if I saw a 289 Cobra (roadster or FIA) on the road anywhere in Australia it would most likely be an original CSX2xxx car, not a replica.

Cheers,
Glen

Yes, indeed the BRA is a roadster albeit now with a short style hardtop.
I have been in contact with it’s owner Aaron.
It’s funny the differing attitudes between the UK and Aus.
Around here if we see a 289 we normally assume that it’s a replica even although there are some wealthy people living in Surrey.
So surprised at your comment that if you see one it’s most likely to be an original.
Amazing.

In Melbourne, there is also a 289 Kirkham roadster with a hardtop. I have a picture of it filed away somewhere.

Just quietly, would you believe me if I said that the majority of owners of 427 Cobra replicas here in Aus. are not aware that there was a 260/289/FIA Cobra that preceded the 427?

Cheers,
Glen

Glen, that doesn’t surprise me a all.
They probably haven’t heard of the Ace either let alone know that the grill is from the earlier car but just turned upside down.
It just comes down to your personal interests I guess.

This is actually a build thread, but I don't know how to create an album, so in the meantime, a bit of 'banter' won't hurt....just coincidentally, six days ago, was coming back to Adelaide from Mt. Gambier, stopped at country town, Keith, 230km from Adelaide, and what did I see on a car trailer? A lovely, old, red Ace! Luckily the owner was stopping for lunch, so I ran after him and caught him. He was surprised when I said "nice Ace"....he said people almost invariably think it must be some old MG. Very few Ace's around so always nice to see one up close and talk to the owner.
Now, how do I create an album?

Cheers,
Glen

Sorry never created an album for the forum.
It may however be a members privilege.
