Door shut trim?

Has anybody trimmed their door shut with aluminium trim? If so what did you use, how did you form it?

I got a local fabricator to fold a 5mm 90 degree return on his press brake on some 1mm aluminium and then cut it to 30mm. It was able to form nicely around the door frame.

If so then yes. I used some ali trim as shown above and gently bent it over my knee, a little at a time.
Secured with c/s slot head screws.

Simon, before you do this, check the clearance between the door and the bodywork where you intend to fit the trim. Your gap was very close above the door catch area.

The only one I can find at the moment where you can just about see the trim. As you can see it trims the inside edge. I never had any seals or anything else. Never needed.

So, if proceeding, then a couple of pointers - my ali trim starts immediately below the door lock mechanism - it was actually hooked just underneath the striker edge for fitting, and then ends just before the hinge. I think I used the Rinsey Mills book for guidance - i know I was obsessing at one stage about the number of screw holes for fitting! Drill these after bending to fit. The hardest part of bending to fit is the bend at the front lower the door aperture as its quite a bend - there is a tendency for the return edge of the ali to want to go out of true, leaving you with a slight twist. If you have heat and a press then it may be easier - I don't have these. Go with small changes at a time and slowly keep making changes and offering it up to the mounting surface, a little at a time till it fits snugly with negligible stress on the grp when mounted. Its actually not very difficult to get a good result, just go slowly.

Before you fit any door trim strips, be aware that no 'slabside' car was ever supplied with these, and I'm not sure Rinsey Mills' book is correct about the AC289 (coil spring, MKIII) - it's possible that only 427s got this strip as built. Certainly no 'narrow bodied' 289 did, but a few may have had them fitted by later owners with the aim of protecting the leather carpet edging. I don't think they're really necessary as I've never had any problem - depends how much bling you like!
