BRA Brake master cylinder

Post by Ian Macadie »

Hello.
I have a BRA which I built over 30 years ago and am doing a rebuild due to IVA requirements it needs a dual circuit master cylinder. Using the moded MGB pedal box has anyone got a suggestion for which cylinder to use? Non servo. Any suggestions will be welcome! P.S. Messing with Cobras for over 30 years... is there any cure?

Has it been on the road only registered incorrectly?

Yes used it for quite a while until children turned up and then used to collect rust and dust, As far as the DVLA are concerned it's still an MGB on SORN

Have you old MOT’s where the car is described as a “Cobra” rather than an MGB?

Does the log book mention BRA.
There were some unusual vehicle descriptions used pre SVA.
E.g. if it says MGB BRA or something similar you maybe in the clear.

If you really need to pass the IVA there will be a chunk of work needed.
All the more recent Cobra replicas used Gerry’s peddle box with twin cylinders and a balance bar. You could talk to BGC motorsport who supplied the brake system.
I feel sure in the early days of dual circuit brakes there would have been a master cylinder with twin ports but single actuating rod. Obviously there would be a danger with that system of not being able exert a different pressure to each circuit which is why Gerry uses the twin master cylinder with balance bar.

Thanks very much for all the comments, I finally solved it by using an American spec cylinder and spacing the clutch m/c away so as to give clearance for the pipes which exit on the left hand side. Brake balance should be ok as it's all standard MGB.
As for the comments about reg, I have a couple of MOTs which say BRA and the original bill of sale from BRA and loads of stuff and pics of the original build but for crazy reason I never registered it properly which wasn't difficult at the time, so 0 out of 10 for that. That's why I will probably have to do an IVA on it. Another Doh! moment, I haven't got a BRA vin plate, the BRA site lists them but I had no reply from my email enquiry, does anyone know if they are still active?
Thanks again for all the comments and happy Summer motoring to you all.
