Morning Tim,

Rimmer Bros parts catalogue has a list of engine No's and the relevant year. When I did my IVA they accepted that as proof!
Give it a go.

Rather than just chance it, I'd ring your local test centre and ask if, they'd accept what Allan suggests.
I had a mail from Ford Technical in the US for my engine, my latest 289 engine (which I have in stock ) has a letter from the supplier stating that it is a 68 289 and references the casting number and when it was made.
You could always get in touch with JRV8 http://www.jrv8.co.uk/ as they supply loads of engines for kit cars and I understand are on the list of authorised verifiers. That option may cost a few quid, but it would be worth it in the long run.
I don't believe there have been many issues with fake Rover blocks as there were with Chevy engines which kicked off all the issues in the first place.

I'm planning to use this as the proof of age of my Rover engine:

Cheers,

Hello, if it's a rover engine then it looks like some letters are missing as well!

Is that the right number to reference,
I know nothing about Rover Engines but Ford Engines have 2 numbers, one is the main cast number and another number is a stamped number.
I wouldn't have a clue where they were on a Rover but a 4 litre should have either 42D, 44D, 57D, 58D at the start and a letter at the end.
3.9 litre have 35D-38D at the start if they are out of a Disco (which is probable).
Sorry cant be anymore help

Tim,
It looks like your number is more or less complete. Two digits, single letter and then five digits stamped on the near side on the ledge above the engine mounting. You just need to work out what the letter is. Mine is A which I was told was a Rover SD1.
I guess being a 4.0 litre it could be TVR or Diso.
Hope that helps.
