289 five bolt/T10

Post by Karl »

For the original fans!
Is there any interest for a 1964 Ford 289 five bolt engine with a B-W T10 gearbox?
All is still in a running car (Ford Falcon Futura Coupe) and would be available early next year.
Best regards Karl

Hi, we are looking for the 2000€ region, but will only be available after March 2020.
Transport at cost to Calais can be arranged.

Hi Karl,
Is this an aluminium case T10 or a cast-iron Galaxie-style one? Be aware that fitting a T10 will require cutting off the old gearbox mount on the Hawk chassis (Mustang style) and welding on a new one (Galaxie style). The T10 trans mount is at a different height than the toploader/T5 mount, and uses the Galaxie/Comet style of 'chocolate block' rubber. Could you give a bit more info on the engine - casting dates, cast iron hipo heads, etc.?
Fröhliche weihnachten!

Hi Roger,
good to hear the specialist!
The problem is that we are relocating our workshop, so car lift and everything is on the move. Will try to take some pictures. The unit is standard from a Falcon Futura Coupe 1964. I think I do have a picture of the casting of the block. I will let you know when I have put some information together.
Also a Merry Christmas over to you!

Hi Karl,
It's good to hear from you, too!
Thinking about it, it might be possible to fit a T10 to a Hawk trans mount bracket using the Mustang gearbox rubber mounting, but I'm pretty sure you'd need to make up a spacer block of 1-1½" as the casting on the gearbox it bolts up to is higher up on the casing. At least it is on my aluminium-cased T10, and I think it it's the same on a cast-iron one I have too. Changing the mounting bracket on the chassis is a fairly straightforward welding job and the new metalwork required is available from Nick Acton. The Falcon box will almost certainly be cast-iron, which is stronger than the aluminium casing - but leafspring Cobras were only ever fitted with aluminium case T10s, apart from the short run of automatics. Toploaders, 5 speeds etc. were never fitted to these cars, but following case failures on early cars some Cobras ended up with cast iron T10s. Obviously there were different gearsets available too.
Love the Falcon Futura, would be a very nice rarity over here!

Early Cobras (260/289) had cast iron T10s, the aluminium cases seem to have made an appearance some time mid '63. This SAAC pdf explains it:
http://wasaac.org/techdocs/T10.pdf
The Falcon t10 has a different tail housing (h-7a) to the Cobra unit which was the Galaxie/Fairlane b7 part and a different gearset (wide ratio). All of which explains why I am less interested in the T10 than the 289 engine. Any idea of the current bore size, standard or oversize?

Cheers

Hi, engine is still in the car as it came from the US, runs smooth, no blue smoke from the exhaust, no overheating. As we have different plans for the car we cannot use engine/gearbox later on and will sell it, we are not going to open the unit.

Now, three years later, we actually are able to sell the engine, without inlet manifold and carburator. The T10 is already reserved. Transport to Calais, Dunkirk can be made on actual cost. Please let me know if there is any interest from Cobra enthusiasts befor we discuss further. There is a lot of interest from people restoring early Mustangs, but I would like to offer it here first.
